First, there were talking digital assistants like Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant. Then there were online chatbots like ChatGPT and Google Bard. On Thursday, Google introduced Gemini, a smartphone app that behaves like a talking digital assistant as well as a conversational chatbot. Immediately available to English speakers in more than 150 countries and territories, including the United States, Gemini replaces Bard and Google Assistant. The new app is designed to do an array of tasks, including serving as a personal tutor, helping computer programmers with coding tasks and even preparing job hunters for interviews, Google said.

While another third (32%) said they have not made the spending decision, only 13% said they would not be acquiring similar gen AI capabilities. Microsoft has pointed to customers including Visa, BP, Honda and Pfizer using Copilot, and professional services firm partners on Copilot AI including Accenture, EY, KPMG, and PwC. And even amid the hype, it's important to keep in mind that as gen AI spending grows, it is still dwarfed by companies' cybersecurity budget needs. That means roughly $5 will be spent on security for every dollar spent on gen AI. But it's growing, and for now at least, when it comes to the billions in gen AI spending, Microsoft is in the pole position.

Shaolei Ren, a researcher at the University of California, Riverside, published a study in April investigating the resources needed to run buzzy generative AI models, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT. Hundreds of millions of monthly users all submitting questions on the popular chatbot quickly illustrates just how "thirsty" AI models can be. The study's authors warned that if the growing water footprint of AI models is not sufficiently addressed, the issue could become a major roadblock to the socially responsible and sustainable use of AI in the future. For Google, meanwhile, total water consumption at its data centers and offices came in at 5.6 billion gallons in 2022, a 21% increase on the year before. watch nowIt's notable, however, that their latest water consumption figures were disclosed before the launch of their own respective ChatGPT competitors.

The chaos is good for Google, Amazon, and others trying to catch OpenAI. Especially Google and Amazon, which were caught flat-footed by ChatGPT's rapid success and the impressive capabilities of GPT-4 and other OpenAI models. "In a fast-moving race, this lap has the advantage going to Google and Amazon but it's a marathon, not a sprint." Microsoft has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI and provides cloud infrastructure that runs the startup's AI products. Interestingly, Google and Amazon recently invested billions of dollars in Anthropic, an AI startup that is probably the closest rival to OpenAI in terms of talent and product capabilities.

A logo of Spotify is seen on a beach during the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in Cannes, France, June 20, 2023. Spotify has been an early adopter of AI, which it used for music recommendation algorithms a decade earlier. The Swedish company is now aiming to use LLMs to replicate that across its non-music content such as podcasts and audiobooks. The music streaming giant has been looking to boost its earnings by increasing its slate of revenue-generating formats such as podcasts and audiobooks. With the expanded Google partnership, Spotify is also exploring the use of LLMs to provide a safer listening experience and identify potentially harmful content.

You may not know this, but Bill Nye, "The Science Guy," has professional experience overseeing new and potentially dangerous innovations. Still, computer science is not the skill that Nye thinks is the most important for students to learn. We don't want a smaller and smaller fraction of people understanding a more complex world," Nye said. Apple is on track to spend $1 billion per year on developing its generative artificial intelligence products, Bloomberg reported. The spending comes as the company plays catch-up to some competitors who have already debuted new AI products and features, such as Google , Microsoft and Amazon , according to the report Sunday. Apple uses AI in its products but hasn't launched a generative AI product along the lines of OpenAI's ChatGPT or Google Bard. For the latter, Apple would use AI to create auto-generated playlists like Spotify does via its partnership with OpenAI. The company is also exploring using AI in Xcode to assist app developers, according to the report.

The main forecast CCS Insight has for 2024 is that generative AI "gets a cold shower in 2024" as the reality of the cost, risk and complexity involved "replaces the hype" surrounding the technology. "But the hype around generative AI in 2023 has just been so immense, that we think it's overhyped, and there's lots of obstacles that need to get through to bring it to market." Companies have to acquire high-powered chips to run AI applications. In the case of generative AI, it's often advanced graphics processing units, or GPUs, designed by U.S. semiconductor giant Nvidia that large companies and small developers alike turn to to run their AI workloads. "Just the cost of deploying and sustaining generative AI is immense," Wood told CNBC.

The US Copyright Office is taking a big step toward new rules for generative AI. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe US Copyright Office is inching closer to creating new rules and regulations around generative AI and how the technology uses the work of authors and other creators. In the government rule-making process, a public comment period typically happens before a final rule is proposed and adopted. The major tech companies behind these generative AI tools use the crawled data to train their models without paying the creators who produced the original content. More online businesses are slowly becoming aware of the degree to which the web is being scraped for the benefit of generative AI.

OpenAI launched a system to spot AI text, but just shut it down because it didn't work. So, developing a way to spot what is AI text versus human text is foundational. In January, it unveiled a "classifier to distinguish between text written by a human and text written by AIs from a variety of providers." Once we can't tell the difference between AI and human text, the world of online information becomes more problematic. I emailed OpenAI to ask about their failed AI text classifier and the implications, including Model Collapse.

A journalist breaks down the prompts he uses to identify errors Google Bard introduces. They include telling the bot to list the facts it relied on or to explain its thinking step-by-step. No matter how specific your prompts are, it will occasionally cite made-up sources and introduce outright errors. By using a few carefully honed prompts, I can identify and deal with any inaccuracies at a glance. Sure, I still need to manually verify whatever Bard spits out, but these four prompts help me fact-check quickly, saving me time by making the artificial intelligence do the heavy lifting.

From Hewlett-Packard to Google, the tales of bootstrapped companies that have turned into giants has inspired generations of entrepreneurs. In 2019, Aiden Gomez and Nick Frosst left Google to create an A.I. Several months later, they went back to Google and asked if it would sell them the enormous computing power they would need to build their own A.I. The big companies like Google, Microsoft and Amazon, he added, are controlling the chips. “They’re controlling the computing power,” he said.

Generative AI could add up to $4.4 trillion to the global economy annually, a McKinsey report says. The hype around generative AI has reached a fever pitch in recent months and for good reason as the industry has the potential to add $4.4 trillion to the global economy annually, a new McKinsey report argues. The report, which looks at the economic potential of generative AI, says it could add between $2.6 to $4.4 trillion to the global economy through "63 generative AI use cases spanning 16 business functions," which is roughly the same amount as the UK's GDP in 2021. Generative AI refers to conversational AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT released in November, which impressed the world with its wide-ranging abilities including creating content, generating music, and writing code. This would largely impact high earners like knowledge workers and could add "trillions of dollars in value to the global economy," McKinsey said.
